Stamford Bridge Football Club is thrilled to announce that Matty Wain, a sports tutor at York College, has been selected for the England Veterans Squad for the Seniors World Cup in Thailand. This prestigious call-up comes as England's national teams gear up for a summer of football, with Gareth Southgate's squad preparing for Euro 2024.
Matty, a 47-year-old former Selby Town attacker, continues to play open-age football for Stamford Bridge and the Harrogate and York Corinthians Over-35 teams. He will join a distinguished group of former internationals, Premier League stars, and FA Cup winners. Among them are Deon Burton, Ian Cox, Barry Hayles, and Sean Davis.
The England Veterans squad will travel to Thailand on May 29, with their first friendly against Pattaya on June 1. Should they reach the final, they will compete in five 80-minute matches from June 3 to June 8, broadcast on Thai TV. The tournament features teams from Thailand, Australia, Iran, England, New Zealand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Laos.
Matty's journey marks his second trip to Thailand with the Veterans, having previously assisted in a 4-0 win against the hosts eight years ago. This time, he will contribute both on and off the field, bringing his UEFA B Licence coaching skills to the team.
Reflecting on his selection, Matty said, “Just putting on an England top and hearing the National Anthem will be very special. I'm excited to play and to work with the management team, analysing games and helping with match strategy.”
Matty also looks forward to the camaraderie and learning from seasoned professionals. Additionally, the tournament includes a Football For Kids Day, where teams will coach underprivileged children and seek donations of football gear.
We invite everyone to support this cause by donating old football shirts and boots at York College. For arrangements, please contact Matty at mwain@yorkcollege.ac.uk.
Join us in celebrating Matty's incredible achievement and wishing the England Veterans the best of luck in their quest to retain the World Cup!
